"the stump" written on 10/05/2017

the stump

young boy
fragments of memory

some shards of glass
some fuzzy
some fluffy

warm room after a cold, wet day
hiking with the troop

where will everyone sleep?
men on the beds
boys on the floor

one man
the leader beside me takes his boots off
his left leg has no foot

he says it was lost
on a hot steamy jungle trail far away
the stump, smooth and pointed
like a phillips screwdriver bit

I roll over
It is hard, uncomfortable
down here
with no mattress to
cushion my hips
i drift into sleep
the stump present in my mind

"I'll be dammed!" written on 29/03/2017

I’ll be dammed!

8:24pm  and there is so much more
still some living
left in the day

could i have it any other way
just to live another day
to have a place to stay
to keep the cold and fears away

times like these
i wonder should i pray
to save tomorrow for another day

billions pray and pretend
to convince themselves there is no end
but
then there is

I guess
I only think and therefore I am
Descartes was right, I’ll be dammed!

"i'm a poet" written on 01/02/2017

i’m a poet
don’t you know it

life is vast
life is huge

a wave of words
a full deluge

strange times
living in a post fact era
politics becomes
simply, i dare ya

early morning
where to find truth?
where to look?

its easy
of course
from a poet
in a book

"early walk" written on 22/06/2015

early walk
streets still asleep

except for the odd
restless soul

cool air, oxygen rich
from the night’s work

songs from cheerful creatures
ring
as the sun rises
as it’s done for millions of years

calm mind, quiet, complete
yearning…comes and goes

nothing accomplished
except
pen gliding over paper
stories, memories
exfoliating layers of
fatigue from the brain

as thoughts become
meaningless, irrelevant
and sometimes

wonderful

Arc

beginning
first breath
light pours into
open eyes, air warm
tickles nostrils fills moist lungs
rough fingertips scrape peach fuzz cheeks
arms, legs stumble, fall then run
grasping the ball, winning, losing, longing
confusion anger as hair grows out in
places before soft, heart hurt, fragile self
learns, loves, shares, hordes, gives, risks
joins with another
ecstasy
pain, success, new life, joy, responsibility, fatigue
pride, she walks, she rides, falls, runs, wins, loses,
looks like you, but isn’t you, becomes herself
then your hair falls out, knees soft ache, glasses
teeth soft, some pulled, stairs much higher
taste of wine, not as rich, he’s fading
less writing, history rolls over
on itself, driving stops
food, toast and tea
soft sheets, others
strangers attend
to the
end

I started my "Poem-A-Day" writing exercise back in 2010. It was a way to get into the habit of writing everyday.  It took awhile but once I got into it I really enjoyed the process.  I took a break in 2023 to work on getting "Carbon Copy" into the wild. I also wanted to re-read my poem-a-day scribblings to see if there were any unpolished gems amongst the rubble.  My plan is to post one per week in my Blog.  Find "Carbon Copy" at:
