The backcountry of the Rocky Mountains is a tranquil place. A refuge from the hustle and bustle of daily life.

That’s how photographer Earl Warnes sees it, anyway—until he stumbles upon a troubling scene in a mountain glen. A helicopter appears, and a group of men subdue and capture a strange, hairless animal. As Earl snaps off a few shots, the men spot him and give chase. Earl manages to escape, but he is haunted by what he saw.

His girlfriend, Elaine Stevenson, is an academic, studying in the emerging field of genethics. Earl shows her the photos he took in the meadow, and they realize that what Earl saw wasn’t an animal at all. It was a woman.

As Earl and Elaine seek answers to the woman’s identity, they are surveilled and stalked by shadowy figures. Earl’s photos are stolen, his archives deleted. Someone doesn’t want the world to know what Earl and Elaine know.

The closer they get to the truth, the more Elaine realizes that the people she trusts most have been lying to her—and that the secret she and Earl uncover may shake the foundations of her reality.

Fast-Paced Intrigue
Reading James P. Angel’s “Carbon Copy” made my heart race! Once I opened the book up, I found it difficult to put down. I ended up reading it late into the night and then early in the morning. It is refreshing to read a novel with such a unique plot. The pacing is excellent. There is a nice balance of action, dialogue, and introspection. The characters are well-developed, and I enjoyed their interactions with each other as their relationships evolved. This added a nice layer of depth to the narrative.

The protagonist also must come to terms with the realization that she spent most of her life being betrayed by people she thought she could trust. Incorporating ethical issues surrounding genetic manipulation into the storyline was fascinating. I found it unnerving to think that something like this storyline could be happening somewhere in the world. That thought added a delicious twist to the suspense.

In conclusion, “Carbon Copy” is a masterfully written mystery-suspense novel that has some elements of science fiction. It will appeal to fans of mystery, intrigue, suspense, and science fiction. James P. Angel’s skillful storytelling and his ability to create well-developed characters all blend in well with this intricate plot. I highly recommend reading “Carbon Copy.” I look
forward to reading other works by this amazing author.

After a career spent as a teacher, researcher and senior administrator of IT, James P. Angel retired and decided it was time to write his book. Carbon Copy, his first novel, is based on an idea that first came to him in the 1980s. An early draft of the first chapter was written on a Smith Corona typewriter.

In his spare time, James enjoys playing music, dancing in “Old Men Dancing”, photography and travel. He lives in Peterborough, Ontario, with his wife Ilona. They love spending time visiting their six children and ten grandchildren!
